~Glitterati~

I'll let you in on a not so little known secret. I have a compulsive personality. Once I find something I like I tend to hang onto it tighter than a kid to their teddy bear during a thunderstorm. One would think that over time I would tire of my little obsessions and move on, but not this lady. I still get the exact same coffee at Caribou every.single.day. I have tried other flavors. I have tried Lattes, Caffé Americano, even cold pressed. I have tried Starbucks, Dunn Brothers, and that cute little place down the road. However, I always come back to my tried and true. I am such a creature of habit that if I even attempt to order something different it sets the earth's orbit all out of whack. Yes my coffee choices have that kind of power ;)

Needless to say, when I discovered this amazing glittering technique on pinterest I just knew it was the answer to all my prayers and that we would become fast and inseparable friends. Once again pinterest brought me another "How have I lived so long without knowing this?" moment. And once again my husband *thanked* pinterest. And by *thanked* I mean he was again beyond grateful that pinterest wasn't around when we were getting married. We had a little something back then called 'the Knot', and that was bad enough.

So when I saw a picture of glitter covered pumps I was hook, line, and sinkered! They were fabulous. Simply fabulous. And the secret behind all this fabulous-ness was a little trick about how you use the glitter and Mod Podge together. Apparently all you do is mix the glitter RIGHT INTO the Mod Podge and *paint* it on with a brush! It cannot be this easy! This fabulous trick may just save my family from appearing as if they are part of some wandering clan of glitter fairies. The stuff is just that omnipresent. There really has to be some magical explanation as to how on earth I find it in the places I do because I am pretty sure I am not crafting naked.

I decided to drop everything and whip up a batch pronto.  I had just the thing in need of some glitterati ASAP, a pair of gold leafed fruit that I wanted to introduce to the 21st century. Don't get me wrong. I love gold leafing on the right piece. I just don't think it is very believable on fruit. I do, however, know tons of fruit covered in glitter ;)

First I painted the fruit with one coat of Annie Sloan's paint in Country Grey to give it a good base. Then I brushed about three coats of this amazing concoction on. It truly is a sight to see!

It covers so smoothly and easily, and has a really durable finish. "Wow" I thought to myself. What else can I beautify?

That hunter green & burgundy sofa picture frame? DONE!

Those drawer knobs parading around as shelf hooks? DONE!

"Is there anything this can't fix" I ask myself? Why yes, yes there is.  This lovely wall sconce was the answer. I took it from plain to hideous in about 30 min flat.

As much as it pains me to say this, some things really don't look better with glitter. But for all the things that do I am going to keep this little secret in my pocket.

After scouring the internet (aka looking a pretty pictures on pinterest all afternoon) I pieced together all my favorite recipes and came up with a super simple way to make your own Mod Podge glitter paint.

Here is my list of supplies:

  • Mod Podge
  • Fine glitter - I used Martha Stewart's. I am pretty sure you can use any type you like, I am just simply enamored with hers.
  • Stir stick - I just used the end of my paint brush, because I try to keep it simple.
  • Container - I love my mason jars. They are definitely another obsession of mine. I could write an entire post all about how awesome they are. I use them because when you are done you just put the top on and it's insta-storage time.
  •
First I poured some Mod Podge into my mason jar.

Then I added some glitter.

Now from what I read you should try to add more glitter than Mod Podge. This is totally true. However I don't have an exact ratio for you because, quite frankly, I hate measuring of any kind. I have no idea what all those lines on a ruler represent. I am pretty sure they were put there just to drive me insane. To this day I still tell my husband "It's 5 short lines past the longest line." I am not even remotely kidding about this. This is why I have been told I will never be a stellar baker. Apparently baking needs exact measurements...and the ability to tell the difference between 1 cup sifted flour and 1 cup flour, sifted. Don't even get me started! There is a reason this is not a baking blog and you are welcome in advance for that :)

Next you simply stir it until it is all mixed together.

And there you have it. You are ready to apply this amazingly non messy, full coverage, durable finish glitter paint to anything your heart desires! And when you are done, if you've managed to contain yourself and you have any left, then you can just pop the top on and store it for another day!

I just cannot believe how transforming this glitter paint is, for me and the pieces ;)

  1. My sister suggested that I should order a size down--being an 8-10 with a C cup, I got an 8, and it's pretty good. (I got a red dress) it was thin, and needed some ironing.
